Awesome Buzz Lightyear Costume

If you’re feeling intimidated about how to make a Buzz Lightyear costume, you shouldn’t be.  In spite of the fact that Buzz has wings, lasers and body armour, the costume itself is actually quite simple in design.  It also affords lots of flexibility, since you can choose how intricate you wish to get with the details.

Buzz Costume Body

The body of the outfit is the easiest part.  White.  Find yourself some plain white pants and white shirt to go with it.  A turtle neck is ideal, but a mock neck will do.  White sneakers, shoes or boots will compliment perfectly.

Next, comes the Buzz Lightyear costume accessories.  Ah, yes, wings, rockets and armour.  Don’t panic.  You can use an simple white V-neck undershirt that can be cut up to make the body armour.  You can also create wings, armour and rockets from crafters foam.

Crafters foam is available in large rolls and pieces, so it can easily be cut to size.  It’s lightweight to wear and easy to work with.  Cut the body armour from neon green foam.  Make sure you also cut a rounded U for the neck piece.  For the wings and jet pack, you can use craft foam, or if you’re feeling adventurous, cut the shapes from cardboard and paint it.

Velcro is the wonder of costuming.  Using stick on velcro makes it easy to attach the wings, body armour and jet pack to the shirt of the Buzz Lightyear costume.  Again, using craft foam is ideal because it’s flexible and allows you to adjust the fitting accordingly.

Lightyear Details

Once you have the main elements of your Buzz Lightyear costume in place, break out the ribbons and buttons!  Neon green ribbon can be glued to the pant cuffs, waistband, elbows, and even the tips of the footwear.  Purple ribbon can be used to make two lines that come from beneath the body armour to the waist of the shirt.

You can decorate the armour, sleeves and jet pack using either coloured craft foam, beads or even buttons.  Use a picture of Buzz Lightyear, or the toy itself to help guide you as you add the robotic buttons and laser shooter.  The jet pack only needs two long, neon green triangles of craft foam to become the elemental Buzz Lightyear accessory.

Last but not least, any Buzz Lightyear costume must have a helmet.  Since he doesn’t wear a full face mask helmet all that often, the easiest headgear is a purple head cover.  It’s easy to make your own with craft foam, by cutting two pieces and simply using glue to attach them.  It’s also just as nice to use a scarf or other fabric, leaving a face opening and having the rest slip over the head and neck.

Whether it’s for a Toy Story themed party or Halloween night, once you learn how to make a Buzz Lightyear costume, all you have left to do is recite: “To infinity and beyond…” to create the magic that can only be Buzz Lightyear.
